ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA PROPOSITION 65 WARNING

The State of California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986—commonly known as Proposition 65—was originally enacted to protect drinking water sources from chemical contamination. Today, it requires warning labels on products that may contain any of approximately 1,000 chemicals identified by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) as known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

Many of these chemicals are found in everyday items such as coffee, jewelry, lamps, ceramic tableware, lead crystal, electrical cords, automobiles, beauty products, and furniture. They include substances like plastics, vinyls, heavy metals, and even certain levels of Vitamin A. Some chemicals, like lead, occur naturally in the environment and are commonly present in air, soil, water, and rock.

As the Los Angeles Times noted, Proposition 65 warnings are now seen virtually everywhere: parking lots, schools, hospitals, retail stores, and more.

At Walls Studio, some of our materials, such as wood, fabrics, foam, or packaging components, may contain trace amounts of substances included on the Proposition 65 list. While the risk is typically associated with prolonged or repeated exposure, California law requires us to include the following warning label on our products:

“This product can expose you to chemicals including [name of one or more chemicals], which is [are] known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.”

Please note, this warning does not necessarily mean the product is unsafe. It is provided in compliance with California law and is intended to help consumers make informed decisions. Risk is determined by level and duration of exposure, and many products with this warning pose little to no actual health risk when used as intended.

Because we ship products nationwide and cannot predict their final destination at the time of manufacturing, Walls Studio includes Proposition 65 warning labels on all applicable products, regardless of where they are ultimately delivered. Retailers selling to California residents are also required to retain these warnings on any items sold.
